The artifact is complex – it is the memory of other buildings, the knowledge of building, the fundamental reworking of something – but it is simple in its offices. The subject who accepts the gesture experiences a happiness. He may even accept that the building has been pleased to see him. This ‘happiness’ is not a vague thing; it is not euphoria; it is even prior to aesthetic pleasure.
